The Mars Volta mp3 from new disc

This track has the coolest drumming and best melodies on the disc. When I listen to it, I can almost hear the radio concert promo with this track in the background, one of those old radio promos from the eighties. This disc hasn't left my car cd player since I bought it...only 7 bucks...I used to think they were unlistenable. Now they're one of my fave bands.

This guy reminds me of Tony in spots. Great energy and power, there's some composition going on with his playing too. Bout time...enough of that limp wristed drumming crap. I find myself air drumming in the car...maybe I'll get fired for it. [img]tongue.gif[/img] [img]wink.gif[/img] [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Maybe this band will lead in the resurgence of young guys learning the craft and playing with technique and skill?

Or maybe not and Ashlee Simpson will have won.

I think it IS prog rock...even though the band embraces other aspects of the music industry and poses politically and imgage-wise, there are actual ODD TIMES. They might not like that label, or maybe they do and they use the alternative pose to get around that thorny issue...these guys are better than Tool at aggressive nu-prog rock. I don't think Tool would EVER use synths and mellotrons and horns like these guys...

It really is as far reaching as Tales from Topographic Oceans...and of course, I LIKE IT.

Hey man, listen to those Genesis and Yes albums, the drumming is incredible and free...which is more than I can say about virtually any music put out today.

The drummer reminds me of what Chad Smith would sound like in a Prog band. They aren't nearly as heavy or nu-alt as Tool. I think of them as completely different animals, and wouldn't even think to even compare them. I also don't think it is nearly as far reaching as Tales or Gates. Don't get me wrong, I like the new disk a lot, there are some cool ideas, but like lots of prog bands there's also lots of self-indulgent farting around.

BTW, This (Robbie Robertson/Ken Nordine influenced spoken vocal) is one of the tracks I wrote out for the next Drum! I agree BR that this track is a highlight of the disk. Thanks for sharing it with those who aren't familiar with them.
